Frequently Asked Questions

In this FAQ, we have tried to answer some of the  most common questions being sent to us on a repeat basis. Be sure to read this document before sending us emails.  The idea and original content was taken from Birdman's Roost, we just added/deleted content, and will expand it as we receive more and more repeat questions.

Where did the band's name come from?
The name for the band comes from a 1943 poem titled "Our Lady Peace" by American poet Mark Van Doren.  Mark Van Doren is the father of  Charles Van Doren, who was involved in a game show scandal in the 1960's.  This incident was the basis of the 1994 movie "Quiz Show".

When did the band start?
Our Lady Peace was formed in Toronto, in 1992, by Mike Turner and Raine Maida. When their original group, "As If," refused to get serious, Mike and Raine decided to audition more committed bandmates. Duncan Coutts, already a friend and high school bandmate of Raine Maida was asked to join the band but refused as he wanted to finish school. Eventually, they found Chris Eacrett and Jeremy Taggart (who was only 17 at the time).

What were the current band members doing before OLP?
Raine was at the University of Toronto, majoring in Criminology.  Jeremy was finishing high school.  Duncan was  working as a set dresser for the TV series "Due South" and playing in the band "Blue Heavies."  Steve was studying at Berklee School of Music.

How did Our Lady Peace get signed?
With limited finances, the band went to Arnyard Studios to record a three-song demo. Raine and a friend passed the demo tape around to several labels at New York CMJ music conference in 1993. Geffen and Interscope showed an interest in the band which then caught the attention of other labels including Sony Music Canada. The band ended up signing with Sony in Canada and later with Relativity Records in the United States.

What is written on Raine's guitar in the Naveed video?
It is Persian for Naveed.  Translated it means "Good News".

What does Naveed mean and who is Naveed?

Naveed is named after an Iranian friend of Raine's. The name means "Bearer of Good News."

What are the markings inside the Naveed CD, and on Raine's guitar during Superman's Dead?
