August 12, 2000

Thanks to NAVINA on the CC and our friend Rob, here are some highlights from Edge 102's interview with Raine and Jeremy yesterday:

  • the new album is coming together "really fast and easy" and is "already over
    half done"!

  • after Summersault, the band is going to New York to record a couple of songs, then back to Toronto to finish.

  • the hardest thing about putting Summersault together (which they started to do in November and finished a week before it was announced) wasn't getting the bands on the bill, as much as putting together the program guide (Raine called it a pain in the ass). They worked really hard to make it more "personal for the fans".

  • The two new songs that they played at Summersault were called "Life" and "Everyone's a Junkie"

  • when Billy Corgan was interviewed they asked why OLP let them go last and he jokingly said "because OLP were afraid to".  Raine just said it was fitting because  "it really is the end, this will be the last time for people to see them live."

  • they mentioned that Duncan and Jamie were running around in Kiss wigs to tribute Kiss on the Village Stage

Gonna Meet a Rock Star

A lucky fan got to hang with the guys in Edmonton after winning  MuchMusic's Gonna Meet A Rock Star contest. The unique show gives music heads a chance to spend a day with the rock star of their choice.

The winner chilled out with Jeremy on site at the second Summersault 2000 stop.

Check this puppy out for yourself on Much at 10:00 p.m. ET on Wednesday, August 16 and 8:00 p.m. ET on Friday, August 18. Thanks to OLP.com for this info!

Although we linked to this news on allstar on August 7th.  It seems a few people missed it.  So we have copied the article here.  Thanks to Seth for pointing this out:

Our Lady Peace told allstar that the band is eyeing the year's end for its next release. "We hope to get [a new album] out by early next year," said drummer Jeremy Taggart. "We just keep making records. We're just looking at more like we'll make a record when we feel like making it. I think it'd be great if we could make a record every year or every year-and-a-half. If we feel like not making a record for two years that's cool too, but right now we just feel like, keep it going. When you have that creative outlet ... our work ethic is pretty strong, so we like to just keep moving." The group plans to head back into the same Toronto studio with long-time producer Arnold Lanni after its Summersault 2000 tour with the Smashing Pumpkins, Deftones, Foo Fighters, Eve 6, and others wraps up Aug. 16.

July 25, 2000

The internet problems continue.  Figures it would happen during our contest!  Well it seems to be working now, but was down most of yesterday.  To stay on schedule we will put up Fish 4, but to be fair for people who might of missed 3 due to our slow service yesterday, we will leave Fish 3 where it is for one more day.  Good Luck!

Lately, OLP has been bad -mouthed  by a lot of Canadian acts. The most recent bashing occurred last night on Muchmusic when Ed the Sock questioned Hugh Dillon, of the Headstones, about his chronic heroin use.  As Hugh persisted to discuss the evils of his own drug use, he stopped and expressed how he didn't want to keep talking about himself.  Ed replied "It could be worse, I could be talking to Our Lady Peace!" Hugh smiled, and laughed and said "Hey I didn't say it" and nodded in what seemed to be  agreement.  Then Hugh added "I won't say anything except, I love Matt Good!" Ed and Hugh then proceeded to mock Raine on national television by going through a whiny chorus of "Superman's Dead".  Then they went into a Headstones video and a commercial. Thanks to xmikex on the CC for the scoop!

In today's Edmonton Sun, Mike Ross wrote an article about "Handicapping the Battling Egos."  Included was a blurb on the supposed feud between Our Lady Peace and Matthew Good.  Here is what it said:  Our Lady Peace vs. Matthew Good: Good says OLP is "put together." OLP responds (before the fact) by organizing a rock festival and not inviting Good. Winner: OLP, 100-1. Singer Raine Maida has a black belt in karate.  Check out Canoe for the whole story!

Thanks again to xmikex on the CC for the news.

July 17, 2000

Drop by our newly renovated Collectibles page for a peak at most of our collection.

Unfortunately, Our Lady Peace lost to Eminem on Combat Zone yesterday.  It's a sad day when such pointless videos of self-prophecy reign over a serious video like Thief.

Don't forget to vote for "Thief" on the Combat Zone at 7 pm EST tonight!!! mailto:combat@muchmusic.com

Unfortunately, OLP will not be on Top 20 Canadian Songs CD.  But, "Superman's Dead" was close at #23 and "Starseed" at #38.

We usually try and avoid news on OLP's personal lives, but felt this news found on Chantal's site relates to Summersault and the joining of two creative musicians for a movie score:

Question: How is Raine? will you be with him at anytime during his summersault tour? have you ever considered working on something together?

Kreviazuk: If I'm not too busy, I would like to take in some shows. There is such a wonderful assortment of incredible talent in the lineup, even from a fan standpoint. We are actually working on something together now for a film. It's a film called Cleopatra from 1912 that's being restored for the Turner Classics. He and I are working on the score for it, and that will be airing at the beginning of August on Turner Classic Movies.

To read more about their collaboration together on this film, read this.

In related news, we attended a Chantal Kreviazuk show last night in Oakville, and not only enjoyed Chantal's flawless performance, but were blown away by our favourite Stunt Musician "Jamie Edwards" stepping in for Chantal and operating the electronic drums, the keyboards, and the guitars!

Possible upcoming Contest!  This morning on Edge 102's Humble and Fred show, Humble Howard mentioned that he was friends with Jeremy Taggart and has recently been teasing Jeremy for not having his driver's license.  Since Jeremy joined OLP  at the young age of 17, he has not had the time or the need to go get it.  Due to this, Humble said that he would like to organize a contest that will allow one lucky Edge listener to give Jero a driving lesson.  The winner would also receive Summersault 2000 tickets and backstage passes to meet the band.  Please remember this is only a possible contest, it may never happen.

Below we have included an excellent review of "Happiness..." from 101cd.com, a UK online entertainment store.  Thanks to our good friend Rick for the info.

101cd.com's Opinion:  5 Stars out of 5
Our Lady Peace are one of Canada more finer exports. Consisting of Raine Maida, Jeremy Taggart, Duncan Coutts and Mike Turner, this Canadian quartet certainly understand the term spine chilling - each member bringing their advanced talents creating a balance of musicianship that UK bands seem to have lost. Every song on this album is just as strong as the previous. Maida's melancholy lyrics somehow find their way into your heart, you just can't help but identify with them. OLP need some kind of recognition in the UK, they are too good to be ignored.

Did you miss OLP at the Juno Awards this year ?  Well now you can catch their  performance of "Is Anybody Home?" right on the band's official website.  Check it out here.  Thanks to bluecoconut for the link.

This just in from Columbia's Daily Dish newsletter:

Summersault 2000

The members of Our Lady Peace are pleased to announce that their vision to take the multi-band festival Summersault on a national tour has been realized. Our Lady Peace's Summersault 2000 will roll across Canada from Vancouver to Halifax in August of 2000 bringing together some of OLP's favorite Canadian and international artists into one giant traveling festival.

The Smashing Pumpkins, Foo Fighters, A Perfect Circle, The Catherine Wheel, Treble Charger and Eve 6 will be joining Our Lady Peace on one of this summer's hottest festival tours. The Summersault experience will feature two stages, a vendor village, and some very cool surprises.

Summersault will kick off in Vancouver, British Columbia, at BC Place on August 4. The tour will continue across Canada hitting Edmonton's Commonwealth Stadium on August 6, the Saskatchewan Place in Saskatoon on August 7, the Winnipeg Stadium on August 9, Molson Park in Toronto on August 11, Montreal's Parterre, parc Jean-Drapeau on August 12, the Rideau Carleton Raceway in Ottawa on August 13, and wrap up in Halifax at Citadel Hill on August 16.

Our Lady Peace conceived Summersault in 1998 as a traveling multi-artist festival. The first Summersault consisted of five shows with such acts as Garbage, Crystal Method, Sloan, Hayden, Esthero and I Mother Earth sharing the stage with OLP.

"This news is so exciting for me and the rest of the band as we've been working on this for the last 4 or 5 months," said Our Lady Peace vocalist Raine Maida. "Taking this tour nationally was our plan from the beginning, and we always wanted to bring on board friends of ours and bands that we're completely impressed by musically. It's going to be a great day of music."

Fans are encouraged to log onto the tour's official website at www.summersault2000.com for more details and information about the festival.

May 23, 2000 (Evening)

"Each Year, terminal illness steals the lives of thousands of children, Mina Kim was one." This message can be found on the heart moving "Thief" video that premiered today on Much Music.  The video effectively sets the mood of the song, with the help of a lot of rain and a soaked OLP.

This additional info about OLP's new "Thief" video courtesy of Columbia's Daily Dish: Our Lady Peace has recently shot a video for "Thief," the 3rd single in Canada from "Happiness Is Not A Fish That You Can Catch." Raine and Jeremy from OLP will be in the MuchMusic environment on Tuesday, May 23rd, at 4pm ET to premiere the new video and talk about their national Summersault festival tour.  Thief" is inspired by a young girl from Waterloo who, while suffering from a terminal disease, showed incredible courage. She died last year.  Directed by the band in conjunction with cinematographer Micha Dahan, the video for "Thief" was shot in Toronto. The video features the debut of a Dynamic Rig- Photosonic camera (as used by NASA), attached to a rapidly revolving arm, that was shooting film off at the rate of 500 frames per second. This unique filming style is responsible for the "captured moment" effect that characterizes this clip so vividly.  With such strong feelings about the lyrics of "Thief," the members of Our Lady Peace conceived this video to be a pure context of texture and mood for the message of the song.

In other news, the following was revealed by Raine and Jeremy during their interview in the Muchmusic environment today: Papa Roach and MG Love are two bands they would "like" to have on Summersault.  Negotiations are still underway.  However, due to their own touring schedules it may not be possible. -  Summersault is going to be a relaxed collaboration of bands and fans.  For example look for members such as Dave Grohl barbequing and possibly performing with other acts on the second stage.

There was a segment on Muchmusic's Rapid Fax this afternoon.  Here is what they had to say:

The stage line-up has been confirmed for Our Lady Peace's Summersault 2000. Band's to perform alongside OLP include The Smashing Pumpkins, Foo Fighters, A Perfect Circle, The Catherine Wheel, Treble Charger and Eve 6. This "News From the Wire" taken from VH1.com :  "The combination of warm weather and the gathering mold underneath our computer keyboards is enough to  turn our thoughts towards what we're going to do this summer. The dream would be to travel abroad to one of the sensational festivals."  And one of these festivals happens to be...

SUMMERSAULT FESTIVAL
When? Most of August.
Where? All over Canada. Our Lady Peace are building out their successful one-off festival to tour the country from Halifax to Vancouver.
Who? Our Lady Peace have already confirmed the participation of Smashing Pumpkins and the Foo Fighters. So clearly an angry, rocking time is expected. There will be more bands announced in the next few weeks, which will probably emulate the star 1998 line-up of Garbage, the Crystal Method, Canadian power poppers Sloan and Fuel.
Do I Dare? Well, it's probably cheaper to go to Toronto than fly to Denmark.

Watch for the 30th Anniversary of Chart in June.  OLP being on the cover of their most popular cover of all time, will no doubt grab them a spot in this celebrated issue, even though they were not included in the recent Rapidfax: "To celebrate their 10th anniversary, Chart Magazine held a photo shoot on Saturday with 10 of the most important musicians in Canada. It was a rare historic moment to capture artists such as Matthew Good, Edwin, David Usher, Jeff Martin, Choclair and Maestro in one room. They'll all be featured on the cover of the June edition of Chart Magazine. Our cameras were there for the shoot."

Attention fans who were planning to see OLP in Jacksonville or Huntsville! These shows have been cancelled due to Raine having strep throat and an ear infection.  According to Denied on the CC, here is an apology from Mike that was posted on one of the Newsgroups.

Hi there;
Sorry about the cancellation in Fla.we were really excited to play in West Palm, but we were making a video the previous day in Toronto. It involved our spending most of the day soaking wet on a rooftop in a chilly breeze. at about 2:30 a.m the night after the shoot I got a call informing me that Raine has a fever a raw throat and pain in one ear...an ear infection anda sore throat, no way a plane fllight was a good idea, ear damage is a possibility when the ear can't equalize. We are waiting to see how Raine is today to see what happens to the rest of the upcoming shows.

Sorry again,
Mike Turner

In other news, keep your eyes on Muchmusic for a new video for Thief that was filmed on May 2.
