The following taken from Columbia Records:  In the March 30th edition of the Orlando Sentinel, Jim Abbot gives Our Lady Peace's Spiritual Machines "4 out of 5 Stars"  and writes,

"On their fourth album, singer Raine Maida, guitarist Mike Turner, drummer Jeremy Taggart and bassist Duncan Coutts  demonstrate a consistent knack for melodic hooks and muscular arrangements heavy on the drums and distorted  guitars....If the band's post-modern outlook seems dark, at least it's delivered in a musical wrapping that embraces the redemptive power of the human spirit. Ultimately, that's the  most memorable force behind Spiritual Machines."

Catch Part 2 of Muchmusic's Spotlight on OLP tonight at 6:30 pm and 11:30 pm EST.

These reviews taken from olp.com:  The UK music press is loving Our Lady Peace's latest album, 'Spiritual Machines.' Here's a sampling of what Brit scribes have been saying about the record in print:

Rocksound Magazine – Album Of The Month with a 5/5 rating. "Canada's finest export Our Lady Peace are back for their fourth outing of heart-soaked, well-crafted rock. Selling millions on their home-turf, Our Lady Peace are probably one of the most underrated bands of our time. Check this track (Middle Of Yesterday) out, love it, go out and buy the album, then buy their back catalogue, you won't be disappointed."

KERRANG! – 4 out of 5 rating. "...this quartet have made four of the best emotional rock albums of the last eight years. This is the latest, and as ever it's packed with crisp clean songwriting, the odd searing post-grunge riff and 'heart-throb' frontman Raine Maida's distinctive nasal croon. "Life" for instance is one of the most perfectly weighted slices of pop-rock you'll hear, while "Middle of Yesterday" plies on the riffs to prove that this band still have the guts to back up their radio friendly glory and "Are You Sad" simply soars."

Metal Hammer – 9 out of 10 rating. "'Spiritual Machines' does not disappoint in any shape or form. It's their immutable post-grunge arena rock-beckoning style and singer Raine Maida's distinct vocals that sets them leagues apart and above many of their nondescript counterparts. Connoisseurs of commanding choruses and beautiful ballads: if you put your trust in this band, in turn they might save your soul."

The album was first on the list of releases and was described as follows:  "The Canadian art rockers swipe their third disc's title from a Ray Kurzweil book on artificial intelligence."  Pretty cool, that they made the mag, however,  it is too bad that EW said it was their third album when it is really their fourth.  Thanks to Rob for the update.

February 3, 2001 (Morning)

Woo hoo!!!  It is official, OLP went Platinum in the month of January.  Kudos to the band for selling 100,000 copies of "Spiritual Machines" in Canada.

Want to know what OLP played at their recent gigs in Montreal?  Well, we've got the setlists.  At the CKOI show on Feb 2, they played:Automatic Flowers, Naveed, Right Behind You, Life, Clumsy, Superman's Dead, Thief, Is Anybody Home, Starseed, In Repair.  And at the Musiqueplus show on Feb 1, they played: Automatic Flowers, Naveed, Superman's Dead, Right Behind you, In Repair, Life, Is Anybody Home and Starseed.

Thanks goes to Andre, Tyler and David for the details.

Congrats to Christine Estima for sending an email to those blasted critics of NOW Magazine after cutting up OLP and other Canadian Musicians.  Here is her letter to the editor,

"if kim hughes and tim perlich(NOW, January 25-31) seem to know what it takes to be a great Canadian musician, then why don't they just quit their jobs as lowly music critics and go out there to make some music! Why don't they show the rest of us how it's done, because no one is spared from their wrath.I was baffled by the appalling negativity and smarminess contained in their article on the Juno nominees. Saying Our Lady Peace present the worst possible image of Canadian music to the world? Saying I Mother Earth are last year's news? Telling Roch Voisine to stay in Quebec? Saying no one buys the records of Wild Strawberries, and that the Tea Party are only big in Germany? It's hard enough for our Canadian musicians to make it in the world. They don't need their own country putting them down.  Ten years ago, all we had was Robbie Robertson and Anne Murray. Hughes and Perlich should feel lucky that they actually had enough Canadian musicians to fill up their article. I think it's time we started showing some support for our homegrown musicians... and started firing smartass music critics."

February 1, 2001 (Evening)

It's now past 6pm EST!  What does this mean?  It means we are no longer accepting any entries for the Search-A-Word contest.  This contest has by far been our most successful yet.  Especially due to the number of entries we've received.

We will now need at least a day to tally up the scores on each entry.  We will then email all the winners tomorrow at 6pm EST, and explain what will be required in the Bonus Round!  We will also post the correct answers at this time.

If you do not receive an email, this means you've made an error of some sort on your entry.  We are sorry, but due to the large amount of submissions, we had to mark strictly.  Which means spelling, missing letters, etc... were all counted as errors.

February 1, 2001 (Afternoon)

This week's Soundscan Charts.

Critics: They love you when you're a nobody, and hate you when you're a somebody. This seems to ring true for most critics. Why? Maybe they want to discover the next best thing? Or more likely... they feed off the anger of fans like us. Any notice is good notice to them. Overall, it doesn't really matter as they are the nobody's and OLP are "our" somebodys!

Then again, as much as we say it doesn't matter....it pisses us all off! Lets feed the wolves anyway! Send a nasty email to the editor with your feelings! Be sure to reference "If we ran the Juno's by Kim Hughes and Tim Perlich" Letter to the Editor.  Here is what we wrote:

Why the hell is it that the critics of NOW seem to Love the Nobody's, and Hate the Somebody's. Toronto area bands that reach any level of success, get better reviews in other parts of the country rather than their own area! Why is this??? What does Kim and Tim have to prove. They figure if they go against the norm, that this small group of obscure music listeners with their head up each others asses are going to care about your newspaper? If anyone in any position of authority at your magazine has any sense, they would either shape them up, or ship them out!

P.S. This recent article is one in many that we have read that bashes local successful Canadians! Look in the Archives!

Don't have access to Canadian Musician Magazine?  Well you can read the article in our Articles section.

According to Canoe, an All Star Canadian box set is due out on February 20, 2001. This will be the second "Oh What A Feeling" box set to be released celebrating Canadian music history.  Like the million-selling first set, "Oh What A Feeling 2" -- which will have a suggested retail price of $39.99 -- has been compiled by musicologist Larry LeBlanc, Canadian editor of Billboard Magazine, who said the new box will feature at least 75 Canadian artists and some songs that have never before been released on CD. Although the setlist is still being finalized, one of the tracks which will be included on this masterpiece is OLP's "Clumsy."

January 25, 2001 (Morning)

January 24, 2001 (Early Morning)

OLP will be shooting their next video for the new single, "Life" on January 30 and 31 at the  Mirabel Airport in Montreal.  In brief, the video will focus on a young couple at the airport. Thanks to Clumsy18 on the CC for the news.

Speaking of "Life", this just in from the January 27th edition of Billboard Magazine:

Our Lady Peace: Life  (4.21)
producer: Arnold Lanni
Writers: R. Maida, D. Coutts, J. Taggart, M. Turner, A, Lanni
Columbia 16436 (cd promo)

New releases viewer highly recommends because of their musical merit. By rock critic Chuck Taylor.

The instantly recognizable pipes of vocalist/lyricist Raine Maida signal the return of modern rock melodic masters Our Lady Peace. The Toronto foursome leads off its fourth set "Spiritual Machines" with this gem of a tune. "Life" combines the melancholy and optimistic, evident in the chorus, "Life is waiting for you/It's all messed up/But we'll survive." Like many of the group's past midtempo hit's such as "Clumsy" and "4 am," this one starts in a mellow, sensitive tone, slowing, turning up the volume throughout the tune, working toward a strong climax and adding a little distortion.  Maida's nasal-ish voice offers a nice alternative to much of today's rock music, and Our Lady Peace's music continues it tradition of combining a catchy tune with alternative sensibilities. The new album debuted at No.5 at home in Canada, a good sign for this band from the north.  Thanks to Spiritual Healer for the article!

OLP are getting a lot of attention in Montreal!  CHOM 97.7 FM  recently played a clip from an interview with Raine.  He said that he felt that "Spiritual Machines" was not really a concept album as he feels very close to Ray Kurzweil.  Speaking of interviews, be sure to tune in to the radio station on January 31st for an interview with Mike Turner.  Thanks goes to ClumsyBoy for the news.

Unfortunately, OLP's "Spiritual Machines" drops a bit on the Soundscan Charts.

January 19, 2001

Finally a good review for "Spiritual Machines" by the critics.  This one from Montreal's Hour Newspaper scored the album 4/5:  "Everyone should be impressed with the fact that OLP released a new disc a mere 14 months after Happiness. The Toronto outfit has now managed to join the arena-sized touring league with the Tragically Hip. This time they've taken their pounding adaptation of modern rock and married it to the ideas of Ray Kurzweil. No need to worry about long-lasting musical tangents here (Radiohead's Kid A) or some longwinded opera (Pink Floyd's The Wall). OLP stay the course, and SM still packs the same catchy rock of Naveed and Clumsy, progressing without being progressive."  Thanks to Raineforest on the CC for typing up the review for everyone!

Unfortunately, OLP was beat by Limp Bizkit on Combat Zone today by approximately 300 votes.  Too bad the contest was not based on video quality, because we all know "In Repair" would of won hands down.

During Combat Zone, Much announced that Raine and Chantal are on their way to the Middle East to shoot a documentary on World Hunger.  We are not sure if Raine is just accompanying Chantal there, or if he will actually take part in the documentary.  Visit war2music for more info.

This week's Soundscan Charts are in, however we are not sure how accurate they are.  We think there might have been some errors made.  It appears that Jam! might have mixed up "Happiness" with "Spiritual Machines" in many of the music categories.  We have emailed Jam! with our concerns and hope to get some feedback soon.  In the meantime, please let us know if the charts change. Thanks!
